OLYMPIA - The Department of Ecology (Ecology) distributed over $58 million in grants in 2005 as part of the state's effort to protect, preserve and enhance Washington's environment.
"We are proud of the important environmental successes around the state that have been supported by grants from Ecology," said Jay Manning, Ecology's director. "We are helping communities implement projects that protect the health of people and the environment."
Ecology assisted varied types of local programs with its grants in 2005. The funding helped Washington's communities affected by this year's serious drought; paid for water-quality projects like wastewater treatment plant upgrades and water-quality improvement plan implementation; helped communities clean up contaminated sites and prevent future toxics problems; and aided local school districts in installing components on buses that decrease the harm caused by their exhaust.
"Our grant program reflects the cooperative approach to environmental protection at work in Washington," Manning said. "We can only succeed if all levels of government, as well as non-governmental organizations, work together to plan and fund the projects needed to protect and clean up our communities."
