Community meeting Aug. 24 about cleanup of Ocean Shores shipwreck

OLYMPIA - The public is invited to attend a community meeting to learn about progress to remove oil from the S. S. Catala, the Ocean Shores-area shipwreck discovered to contain oil last April.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, in the Wave Room of the Ocean Shores Convention Center, 120 W. Chance A La Mer Ave, Ocean Shores.

The Department of Ecology's Jim Sachet, who is supervising the project, and the cleanup contractor will provide a slide show presentation and answer questions.

Ecology is overseeing cleanup contractors who began working at the site on July 31. Workers are currently removing oil and oily water from the hulk. Ecology expects the oil cleanup to continue into September.

For safety considerations, the Catala cleanup project is closed to the public. The Department of Ecology is continually updating its Catala Web site with images of the cleanup activity at: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/spills/incidents/catala/cata.htm . To see the images, select "cleanup progress" in the left column of the Web page found at this link.

Representatives from partnering agencies in the Catala cleanup will also be at the meeting. They include the state departments of Fish and Wildlife, Natural Resources, the Washington Parks and Recreation Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
