YAKIMA - The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is accepting comments on a draft permit that would allow treated mine water and storm water from the Buckhorn Mine project to be discharged to ground water and surface water near Chesaw in Okanogan County.
Discharges from the mine project would be to ground water through settling ponds and an infiltration system, and to Gold Bowl Creek, South Fork Nicholson Creek and Marias Creek.
Crown Resources Corp. has applied for a new National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit in accordance with state and federal clean water laws. Following evaluation of the permit application, Ecology has made a tentative determination to issue the permit based on effluent limitations and special conditions that will prevent and control pollution.
A public hearing on the proposed permit is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the Old Oroville Depot, 1210 Ironwood St., in Oroville, Wash.
Written comments will be accepted through Jan. 2, 2007. Comments should be sent to Cindy Huwe, Department of Ecology, Central Regional Office, 15 W. Yakima Ave., Suite 200, Yakima, Wash., 98902. Comments may be emailed to chuw461@ecy.wa.gov.
The draft permit and fact sheet may be viewed at the Ecology Web site: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wq/permits/central_permits. To obtain a copy of the permit, please call Cindy Huwe at 509- 457-7105.
