Ecology to unveil first oil spill-response plan for Snohomish River basin

OLYMPIA - The Department of Ecology (Ecology) has developed a series of response strategies designed to reduce adverse environmental effects from oil spills into the waters of the lower Snohomish River basin.

The "site specific" response strategies are also known as "geographic response plans." In the event of an oil spill to the lower Snohomish Basin, the draft plan sets priorities on how spill response equipment and cleanup crews should be deployed to reduce impacts to identified sensitive natural, cultural, and significant economic resources.

This is the first time that Ecology has developed a draft geographic response plan for the lower Snohomish River basin that covers the confluence of the Skykomish and Snoqualmie rivers to Possession Sound.

The agency is seeking public input on the draft plan at a workshop being held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Snohomish Fire and Rescue, 1525 Avenue D., Snohomish.

The purpose of the workshop is to gain feedback from members of the public to ensure the proposed plan adequately addresses public resources.
