Ecology now handling Chelan County land-clearing burn permits

YAKIMA - Procedures for obtaining a land-clearing burn permit have changed in Chelan County. All permits are now issued by the Department of Ecology Central Region Office.

As of January 2007, land-clearing fires are only allowed outside urban growth areas and require a permit. Inside urban growth areas, land-clearing and residential burning is prohibited. Before burning, learn the rules for where you live. To find out if you are inside an urban growth area, contact Chelan County Community Development at 667-6221.

For more information and to obtain a permit for land-clearing and or agricultural burning, please contact the Department of Ecology at (509) 575-2490.

Before you start any outdoor fire, contact your local fire department. Remember, smoke exposes people to dangerous toxins and is particularly harmful to those with asthma and respiratory illnesses, children and the elderly.
