OLYMPIA – The president of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) U.S. Initiative will be visiting Olympia Wed., March 19.
Corey Brinkema will speak about FSC certification, which provides an internationally recognized trademark of responsible forest management practices. Brinkema will address the market for FSC-certified products regionally and nationally and the impacts of FSC-certified forest practices on climate change and the Puget Sound.
Brinkema has 20 years of experience in sustainable development. The meeting is open to anyone with an interest in green building, timber certification and sustainable development. He’ll be joined by Ian Hanna, program director with Northwest Natural Resource Group, Washington’s leading FSC advocacy organization.
Their presentation is from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Natural Resources Building, Room 172 on March 19.
“A robust FSC market will bring Washington’s citizens broad public benefits – from habitat to water quality to a strengthened timber industry,” said Hanna. “That opportunity is right around the corner and now is a great time to learn what FSC is all about.”
With state law now requiring all construction projects that receive public funds be built to a green standard, there is increased interest in and attention to the different ways to achieve that expectation.
FSC certified timber products are one way builders can earn points towards meeting green building standards. They receive exclusive points in the LEED standard (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), BuiltGreen and several other green building certification programs.
