Department of Ecology News Release - May 5, 2008
08-111
OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is seeking applications for the 2008 Governor's Award for Sustainable Practices. Businesses, government agencies, schools and organizations may apply through June 6. The award recognizes those who are leaders in sustainability, waste reduction and conservation. The competition is open to any Washington facility in good standing with environmental regulations. Of particular interest are efforts to reduce or stop the use of hazardous materials, waste and emissions, or to switch to practices that conserve resources and energy.
The winners will be honored at a ceremony in the state capitol in the fall. Winners will also receive additional publicity about their achievements. The award can honor a wide range of efforts. Last year's winners included a high-tech manufacturer and a worm farm that produces organic-certified soil amendments and seed in addition to earthworms for worm composting. There have been 110 winners since the award began in 1991.
An external panel of judges selects the winners from finalists reviewed by Ecology sustainable practices experts. The judges are past winners, pollution-prevention experts, and representatives from business, labor and environmental groups, and academia. The application form, guidelines and information about past winners can be found at the awards website at: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/hwtr/GovAward/index.html
