Comment period begins for East Bay cleanup site

OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) today is beginning a public comment period for the proposed cleanup of contamination at the East Bay redevelopment cleanup site in Olympia. The property is owned by the Port of Olympia.

Ecology and the Port are signing an agreed order, which will require the Port to:

The public is invited to review and comment on the draft agreed order from Sept. 2 through Oct. 2, 2008.

The first phase of the cleanup investigation will begin during the comment period. However, the Port could be asked to do additional work based on the comments received by Oct. 2. Once the Port has developed an interim action work plan later this fall, Ecology will hold a public meeting and comment period.

The East Bay redevelopment area is located along Marine Drive in Olympia’s downtown. Over the years, it has been the location of timber-related industries, commercial and light industrial activities and storage facilities. Historical activities have caused soil and groundwater contamination.

The Port entered the Voluntary Cleanup Program for this site in 2007. The site was transferred to the formal cleanup process in February 2008 to speed cleanup and ensure Ecology oversight.

The draft agreed order is available at the Olympia Timberland Library, at Ecology’s Headquarters on Desmond Drive in Lacey and via the Ecology Web site: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/tcp/sites/eastBayRedev/eastBayRedev_hp.htm
