YAKIMA – Washington Department of Ecology Director Jay Manning has named G. Thomas “Tom” Tebb as regional director for Ecology’s central regional office in Yakima.
Tebb, who has 23 years of environmental and engineering experience, replaces Derek Sandison, who served in the post for five years. The regional office serves Benton, Chelan, Douglas, Kittitas, Klickitat, Okanogan and Yakima counties, and includes a field office in Wenatchee and two field workers in Twisp.
Tebb has worked 17 years for the agency in four different programs. Most recently, he served as manager for the water resources program and operations manager for the Columbia River water program in Central Washington. He has also served as a manager for Washington’s nuclear waste, water quality, and shorelands and environmental assessment programs in Ecology.
“Tom is a smart, capable, problem-solving environmental leader. He understands our state’s environmental challenges and is adept at forging partnerships that protect our environment and our salmon and at the same time respond to the needs of our communities, farms and businesses,” said Manning.
Tebb received his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Washington University in environmental geology and completed advanced studies in geotechnical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a licensed geologist, hydrogeologist and engineering geologist in the state of Washington.
Tebb, who resides in Prosser, grew up in a farming family in the Lower Yakima Valley, graduated from Toppenish High School and attended Yakima Valley Community College.
“I have strong family roots in eastern Washington, and I understand the complex challenges communities in Central Washington face,” Tebb said. “I hope to build on the good work my predecessors accomplished, and I look forward to engaging local governments and stakeholders in achieving our environmental goals in a sustainable way.”
Ecology’s mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington’s environment by promoting the wise management of air, water and land. The agency fulfills that mission by preventing and cleaning up pollution and supporting sustainable communities and natural resources.
