SPOKANE – The state Department of Ecology, Lewis County Fire District #6 and the Washington State Patrol are responding to a fire at a commercial building in Chehalis this morning.
The fire district was notified at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday that the Cascade Structural Laminators manufacturing facility, 195 Ribelin Rd. in Chehalis, was on fire.
Fire suppression water has washed approximately 500 pounds of laminating "glue" into a ditch and nearby wetlands that eventually drain into the Chehalis River. The glue contains the chemical phenol resourcinol and an accompanying catalyst and is used to glue lumber together to form structural beams.
The fire is now under control. The Department of Ecology will remain on scene to assess and respond to any environmental effects the contaminated water may have on the adjacent wetlands, creek and rivers.
More information about the spill will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
