YAKIMA – Boats and containment boom will be deployed on the Columbia River at Kirby Billingsley Hydro Park near East Wenatchee on Monday, June 29, 2009, as emergency personnel hone their response skills in case oil was to be spilled on the river.
The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is sponsoring the training with local emergency responders. The drill provides an opportunity to practice response techniques in the event oil were to spill from dams, transportation accidents or other possible sources.
Onlookers will see boats on the water deploying yellow oil containment boom and crews performing shoreline assessments.
Trailers filled with oil-spill response equipment have been provided to Chelan County Public Utility District, Wenatchee Fire Department, and Chelan County Emergency Management as part of an effort by Ecology to help local authorities respond rapidly to oil spills.
