BELLINGHAM – The state Department of Ecology (Ecology) is responding to what appears to be a diesel fuel spill in Bellingham Bay off the shore of Boulevard Park.
The spill was reported to Ecology about 12:45 p.m. by kayakers in the area. Ecology spill responders are on scene investigating the source and volume of the spill.
A thin, silvery sheen stretches along the shore from Taylor Dock at the south end of the park to the north end of the park. It is about a half-mile long and about 200 feet wide and is touching the shore in places. It does not appear to be recoverable. Park visitors and boaters should avoid contact with the oil.
Oil spilled in water forms oily patches that spread out quickly. Small amounts of oil can create slicks or sheens that cover many acres of the water’s surface.
