Washington Dept. of Ecology - October 1, 2013
OLYMPIA – Two public involvement opportunities are coming up on Oct. 9 and Nov. 6 as the Department of Ecology (Ecology) works through rule making to update the state’s surface water quality standards for toxic substances, including fish consumption rates.
Ecology is using the public meetings to engage and educate people about the complex technical and policy issues to update the human health criteria section of the state’s standards.
The rule making also is looking at advanced regulatory tools that will allow regulated water dischargers to remain in compliance with the updated standards.
These public meetings will assist Ecology in developing a draft rule in 2014. Once the draft rule is developed, Ecology will ask for formal public review and input.
Ecology is hosting a Delegates’ Table meeting as a website-assisted conference call from 9:30 a.m. to noon (PT) on Wed., Oct. 9. There will be no in-person opportunity.
The primary focus of the teleconference is the Delegates' Table conversation. The public is invited to listen to the discussion. Non-delegates also are encouraged to attend the Water Quality Standards public meeting on Nov. 6, 2013, where additional opportunities for public comment will be available.
Participate: Free teleconference registration is available online. Participants can listen to the Delegates’ Table discussion on the telephone and watch presentations from any online computer.
The Nov. 6 Water Quality Standards public meeting will be an interactive webinar. Ecology will present ideas and options for human health criteria development and implementation tools. The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (PT) at Ecology’s headquarters building in Lacey, Wash.
Participate by phone: Free webinar registration is available online. Webinar participants can ask questions, participate in discussions, and watch presentations from any online computer and phone.
