Ecology to share preliminary ideas for updates to water quality standards at Nov. 6 public meeting

OLYMPIA – In a public meeting Nov. 6, the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) will lay out preliminary ideas for updates to the state’s water quality standards for toxics.

This is the part of the water quality standards, called "human health criteria" that relate to how clean the water needs to be to protect human health.

Ecology is currently conducting rule making to update this part of the standards based on current Washington information that reflects the amount of fish Washingtonians eat.

These preliminary ideas are not Ecology’s proposed rule. Ecology is on track to propose a draft rule with its proposed updates in 2014.

During the rule making, Ecology is also is looking at additional advanced regulatory tools to help businesses and other entities stay in compliance while they work to remove toxics from their discharges.

Once the draft rule is developed, Ecology will ask for formal public review and input.

Ecology’s public process aims to engage and educate people about the complex technical and policy issues to update the human health criteria section of the state’s water quality standards.
