Public hearing on proposed State Environmental Policy Act Rule changes

OLYMPIA – The public is invited to comment and attend a hearing on proposed changes to the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) Rules on Jan. 29, 2014.

SEPA was enacted by the Washington Legislature in 1971 to ensure that environmental values were considered during decision-making by state and local agencies. SEPA requires identification and evaluation of probable impacts to the environment before making decisions on projects, plans, programs, and policies.

The public comment period is open until Feb. 5, 2014. Public comments can be submitted by:

Ecology will host a presentation of the proposed changes with a question and answer session followed by the formal hearing.

The proposed changes include greater flexibility for cities and counties and an expanded  public comment period. The SEPA advisory committee drafted the proposed changes in partnership with the Washington Department of Ecology. Advisory committee members represented cities, counties, the business community, environmental groups, agriculture, state agencies, cultural resources and tribes.
