Washington's Emission Check Program

Where and when can I get a test?
Testing is done by a Department of Ecology contractor, Applus+ Technologies, Inc. See the contractor's Web site for test station locations, hours, closures, wait times, test tips, fees, etc.

How much does a test cost?
A test costs $15 and can be paid for as follows:

• Cash:  No bills over $50 are accepted.
• Credit/Debit Cards:  Visa/MasterCard credit and debit cards are accepted. ATM cards (cards that must be processed with the use of a PIN/code) are not accepted.
• Checks:  Checks must be payable to Applus, drafted on a local bank, and have your name printed on the check.  You must have photo ID matching the name and signature on the check.

Where is testing required?
In Washington, emission testing is required in the urban areas of Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane counties.

Emission testing is required by federal law in areas that have had problems meeting health-based air quality standards.

What vehicles must be tested and when?
Gasoline and diesel vehicles 5-25 years old need an emission test every other year. Your registration renewal notice will tell you if your vehicle needs a test. In 2009, odd-numbered model years 1985 through 1995, plus 1996 through 2004 even-year model vehicles need an emission test before licensing. No motorcycle or scooter testing required. An emission test may also be required before some private party title transfers.

Why does emission testing matter?
Motor vehicles are Washington's largest source of air pollution. The Emission Check Program tests factory-installed emission control systems on motor vehicles, and identifies vehicles whose systems are not working properly. This program is estimated to prevent more than 149,000 tons of air pollution in Washington per year.
