Air Quality Program Grants and Loans

Air quality affects public health, the environment, and quality of life. Air pollution causes lung disease, makes existing heart and lung disease worse, and is associated with cancer. The Air Quality Program's goal is to safeguard public health and the environment by preventing and reducing air pollution. Washington's main sources of air pollution are motor vehicles, outdoor burning, and wood smoke.

The Air Quality Program offers grant opportunities to help:

  • Reduce wood smoke by replacing old wood stoves and other high-polluting heating devices with cleaner, more efficient heating equipment.
  • Educate wood stove users about proper use of stoves, clean burning, and health effects of wood smoke; and support enforcement of burn bans.
  • Reduce emissions of toxic air pollutants through purchase and installation of  clean diesel technologies on publicly and privately owned heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment.
