2016 BEACH Program Report

Clallam County

Eight beaches in Clallam County were sampled in 2016. The Makah Tribe sampled five of these beaches year-round for their BEACH Program.

As part of the Washington State BEACH Program Clallam County sampled three beaches weekly from May 23 through August 30, 2016. Results are presented in the following table. Details on each of the beaches Clallam County sampled are presented in the text below.

Cline Spit County Park Beach

During the 2016 monitoring period, Cline Spit County Park beach had good water quality. Cline Spit beach experienced one period of high bacteria levels on August 22nd that resulted in a closure being issued. This is an improvement from the 2015 sampling season when Cline Spit had four high bacteria level events during routine monitoring. In 2015, this beach did not meet swimming standards for the period sampled, because the 90th percentile bacteria levels (384 enterococci) exceeded the swim standard of 276. However, in 2016, Cline Spit beach once again met the swimming standard for both the geometric mean and the 90th percentile.

Hollywood Beach

During the 2016 swim season, Hollywood Beach had good water quality. On June 14th this beach had bacteria levels in the advisory range, but subsequent sampling showed that bacteria levels had dropped into the safe swimming range. This is an improvement from the 2015 swim season that had several swim closures and advisories issued.

On April 21, 2016, BEACH Program staff conducted a shoreline survey at Hollywood Beach. A recommendation was made to install a pet-waste station at the entrance to the beach.
