Goss Lake is located on Whidbey Island, three miles west of Langley. Three intermittent streams contribute minor inflow early in the year, but there is no surface outlet. No gasoline-powered boats are allowed on the lake. Goss Lake was monitored by Ecology staff only.

SUMMARY OF VOLUNTEER SURVEY There was no survey response for 1996. FIELD OBSERVATIONS OF ECOLOGY STAFF About 40% of the shoreline was naturally vegetated. Moderate amounts of alder along the shoreline and sparce amounts of Juncus sp. The water was extremely clear. No submerged macorphytes observed. Moderate amounts of blue-green algae observed in the spring, none observed in the late summer.
TROPHIC STATUS Estimated Trophic State: Oligotrophic Mean Trophic State Index (Secchi): 32N* (Oligotrophic) Mean Trophic State Index (Total Phosphorus): 27 (Oligotrophic) Mean Trophic State Index (Chlorophyll a): 36 (Oligotrophic) *The calculated TSI is an estimate. The Secchi disk hit bottom (B), entered the weeds (W), or there were too few valid readings (N), or the calculation was based on qualified data (J), or TSIP was based on spring data (S).
SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION OF TROPHIC STATE ASSESSMENT Goss Lake is oligotrophic. All TSI values strongly support the oligotrophic classification. There were very few macrophytes or algae observed during on-site visits.
COMMENTS FROM 96/09/05 AQUATIC PLANT SURVEY raining, turned partly cloudy with breeze. Hard to tell max depth of plant growth. Osprey, green and blue herons. No submersed plnats, just Chara at south end. Cattails white at the base. Mostly with steep rocky sides. Good shoreline vegetation in most areas, circumnavigated littoral zone. Did not see any sign of M. spicatum. Maximum depth of plant growth: 5.0M.
AQUATIC PLANT LIST (This list may be from multiple years and sources.)Chara sp. (muskwort) Glyceria sp. (mannagrass) Iris pseudacorus (yellow flag) Juncus sp. (rush) Myriophyllum sp. (water-milfoil) Polygonum amphibium (water smartweed) Scirpus sp. (bulrush) Sparganium angustifolium (narrowleaf bur-reed) Typha sp. (cat-tail) unknown plant (unknown)
