Lone Lake is located on Whidbey Island, 2.5 miles southwest of Langley, and one mile southeast from Goss Lake. It is fed by two small inlets, and drains to Useless Bay. Lone Lake was monitored by Ecology staff only.

SUMMARY OF VOLUNTEER SURVEY There was no survey response for 1996. FIELD OBSERVATIONS OF ECOLOGY STAFF There was macrophyte growth to the bottom. There were about 10 Cladoceran observed during filtering in the spring (10/500 ml). Lots of damselflies observed. Macrophytes observed included: Elodea canadensis, Scirpus sp., Typha latifolia, Potamogeton praelongus, Aphanizomenon sp., Nuphar lutea, Potamogeton amplifolius, Chara sp. and Salix sp.
TROPHIC STATUS Estimated Trophic State: Eutrophic Mean Trophic State Index (Secchi): 44N* (Mesotrophic) Mean Trophic State Index (Total Phosphorus): 66 (Eutrophic) Mean Trophic State Index (Chlorophyll a): 62 (Eutrophic) *The calculated TSI is an estimate. The Secchi disk hit bottom (B), entered the weeds (W), or there were too few valid readings (N), or the calculation was based on qualified data (J), or TSIP was based on spring data (S).
SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION OF TROPHIC STATE ASSESSMENT Lone Lake is classified as eutrophic. All valid TSI values are indicative of an eutrophic lake. Secchi values are invalid due to small sample size. The large plant population and considerable algal growth are additional indicators of an eutrophic lake.
COMMENTS FROM 96/09/04 AQUATIC PLANT SURVEY Cloudy, breeze, rain. Osprey, lots of ducks and geese. Plants growing throughout the lake, could not get secchi depth. Pulled Lythrum salicaria in one area, could not easily access another spot. P. praelongus dominant in 2 m + water. Shoreline with Scirpus and Nuphar nearly throughout. Hard to survey because so many plants, wide littoral, and inclimate weather.
AQUATIC PLANT LIST (This list may be from multiple years and sources.) Ceratophyllum sp. (coontail) Chara sp. (muskwort) Elodea canadensis (common elodea) Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) Nuphar lutea (yellow water-lily) Nuphar polysepala (spatter-dock, yellow water-lily) Phalaris arundinacia (reed canarygrass) Potamogeton praelongus (whitestem pondweed) Potamogeton sp. (pondweed) Potamogeton zosteriformis (eel-grass pondweed) Scirpus tabernaemontani (softstem bulrush) Typha sp. (cat-tail)
