The Cleaner Production Challenge

The Cleaner Production Challenge focused on the metal finishing and printed circuit board manufacturing industries. The Toolkit includes strategy development ideas, an opportunity list, vendor links, and other tools to help facilities gain better process control, reduce water use, produce less waste, and improve environmental compliance. Cleaner Production Challenge

Ecology's Cleaner Production Challenge (CPC) was a voluntary resource conservation project that focused on wastewater and toxic sludge generation at metal finishing facilities. The project fostered collaboration between companies with similar processes and called upon endorser organizations to assist with outreach. Despite a concurrent economic downturn, Cleaner Production facilities saved 235 million gallons of water and $1.8 million.

The CPC Awards ceremony, held on May 9, 2005 to recognize the "cleaner production" facilities, reinforced their leadership role within the industry. They included 16 businesses and three military installations that met the Cleaner Production Challenge goal of 10 to 25 percent reduction in wastewater and sludge generation. The ceremony was enthusiastically attended by representatives of many of the CPC facilities. A total of 43 companies took part in the CPC. The 19 receiving awards generated 156 million gallons less wastewater and 384,000 pounds less sludge during the challenge period.

The CPC Team of Ecology toxics reduction staff and the Northwest Pollution Prevention Resource Center produced the Cleaner Production Challenge Toolkit (linked above).

The team won the 2005 Most Valuable Pollution Prevention award from the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable.

CPC data is summarized in The Cleaner Production Challenge; A Voluntary Resource Conservation Effort, Final Report, available on Ecology's Web site: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/pubs/0404025.pdf.
