U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Management Guide for Small Laboratories
This document assists those responsible for administering or improving environmental management programs at small labs. The document outlines management and federal regulatory issues for improving lab environmental performance, but does not prescribe in detail all required factors and considerations.
EPA Clean Water Act Analytical Method
EPA publishes laboratory analytical methods used by industries and municipalities to analyze the chemical, physical, and biological components of wastewater and other environmental samples required by regulations under the authority of the Clean Water Act (CWA). This site offers information on alternate test procedures, method flexibility, and other special topics.
EPA Clean Water Act Analytical Methods Alternate Test Procedures
EPA's Office of Science and Technology manages the program for CWA methods used by industries and municipalities to analyze the chemical, physical, and biological components of wastewater and other environmental samples as required by regulations. Analytical methods published in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) at Title 40 Part 136 may have alternate test procedures and/or method flexibility. This webpage provides guidance to allow labs to evaluate methods that could be adapted to micro-chemistry scale that reduce generated waste.
EPA Forum on Environmental Measurements (FEM)
FEM is a standing committee of senior EPA managers established to develop policies to guide EPA's measurement community in:
- validating and disseminating methods for sample collection and analysis.
- ensuring that monitoring studies are scientifically rigorous, statistically sound, and yield representative measurements.
- employing a quality systems approach that ensures that the data gathered and used by EPA is of known and documented quality.
FEM may be a source of modified standard methods that reduce the use of hazardous substances or the generation of hazardous waste.
Greener Education Materials (GEMs) for Chemists
GEMs is an interactive collection of chemistry education materials focused on green chemistry. The database is a comprehensive source of educational materials including laboratory exercises, lecture materials, course syllabi, and multimedia content that illustrate chemical concepts important for green chemistry.
Hazardous Waste SW-846 Process Streamlined, EPA Fact sheet
EPA allows more flexibility in the use of alternative methods outside of those listed in EPA publication, SW-846, Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods. This document clarifies the difference between SW-846 methods that are required and those that are intended as guidance methods. In addition, some required uses of SW-846 methods−known as method-defined parameters such TCLP for metals−remain regulated in situations where a particular procedure is the only one capable of properly measuring for sampling and analysis.
Industrial Materials Exchange (IMEX)
IMEX is one of the premiere material exchanges in the Pacific Northwest. IMEX is a free service designed to help your business find markets for your industrial by-products, surplus materials, and (reusable?) wastes. Businesses, offices, schools, and individuals "advertise" their surplus/unwanted materials, or materials they are seeking, by submitting an electronic IMEX listing form. They are then listed on the IMEX web site, to be viewed by interested waste generators and waste recyclers.
National Environment Methods Index (NEMI)
NEMI is a partnership of water-quality experts from federal agencies, states, municipalities, industry, and private organizations. The NEMI database includes a “greenness” profile for many common water quality regulatory standard methods. Analytical labs may adopt alternative standard methods that could reduce hazardous substances used or hazardous wastes generated.
King County Laboratory Waste Management Guide
This report was prepared by the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County, Washington. The report gives guidance on proper storage, handling, neutralization, and other treatment options. Safety and handling techniques are also covered.
Treatment by Generator (TBG) Guidelines
This publication explains portions of the Dangerous Waste Regulations, Chapter 173-303 Washington Administrative Code (WAC), that apply to waste treatment by generators. TBG refers to methods by which generators may treat their own wastes on site without first obtaining a dangerous waste treatment permit.
Department of Ecology Accreditation of Environmental Laboratories
Ecology’s Laboratory Accreditation Unit oversees all accredited labs in Washington. They are familiar with all labs that have been accredited for modified standard methods and may help identify alternative methods available. Their publication titled Procedure Manual for the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program, includes guidance on the proficiency testing required before a lab can apply for accreditation for a modified method.

Some analytical laboratories in Washington have modified certain regulatory analytical methods and have earned accreditation for the modified method. Analytical labs may consider connecting with similar labs to inquire about modified analytical methods that use less hazardous substance or generate less hazardous waste.
