Boatbuilding, Shipbuilding, and Marinas Top Tips
Top Pollution Prevention Tips for Boatbuilders, Shipbuilders and Marinas
The following ideas have been used in boatyards and marinas around the
state to prevent pollution.
Use those tips that apply:
- Enclose, cover, contain, or tarp areas in which abrasive blasting, sanding,
pressure washing, or painting is done.
- Consider alternative paint-removal techniques: wet abrasive blasting,
dustless sanders, etc.
- Consider alternative paints (hard paints; non-VOC-containing; slippery
paints; copper-loaded gelcoats) and paint strippers (non-chlorinated). Strictly
follow tributyl tin paint regulations.
- Recycle thinners, paint-gun-cleaning solvents, and fiberglass cleanup
solvents.
- Consider alternatives to acetone for fiberglass tool cleanup: citrus-based,
emulsifiers, DBE, etc.
- Recycle pressure washwater; clean up pressure washing pad and sump
immediately to prevent contamination of stormwater runoff.
- Segregate conditionally-exempt wastes for recycling: used oil, oil filters,
antifreeze, lead-acid batteries, etc.
- Educate do-it-yourself customers; have customers read and initial Best
Management Practices checklist; charge environmental fee.
- Have spill-containment materials close to fueling docks and launch sites.
- Prevent bilge contamination by keeping oil-absorbent pads in bilge.
