Crown Beverage Packaging
Reduced Dangerous Waste, Water and Energy Use
Crown Beverage Packaging, Inc. is a can manufacturing facility in Olympia. Ecology (HWTR) started working with them in 1991 on pollution prevention –they were a large quantity generator of dangerous waste.
Since then, Crown’s dangerous waste generation and hazardous substance use has dramatically decreased, while its production level remained relatively constant. During the last pollution prevention planning period (2001-2006), Crown reduced hazardous waste generation by 70%.
They also reduced chemical usage, and conserved 2.5 million gallons of water per year. Crown is near their goal to become a small quantity generator, and getting out of pollution prevention planning.
And they’re not stopping there. Ecology staff initiated an energy audit, conducted by WSU Energy Office and UW Industrial Assessment. The recommendations from that audit are expected to save the facility over $160,000 per year.
Crown has already started implementing changes that will reduce the facility’s total greenhouse gas impact by 604 metric tons.
