Common Pesticides Sources:

Pesticides have been or are currently registered with EPA for the purpose of destroying insects, unwanted vegetation, birds, mammals, fungus, germs, molds and other living things.

Endrin is an insecticide, manufacturing and use has been cancelled in the US.

Lindane is an insecticide used to treat human lice and scabies. It is also used on animals to kill ectoparacites.

Methoxychlor is an insecticide.

Toxaphene is an insecticide, most uses have been canceled.

2,4-D is a very common herbicide, usually found in weed and feed type products.

2,4,5-TP Silvex is a discontinued herbicide that was used to control woody plants on non-agricultural land.

Chlordane is an insecticide banned in 1988. It was used for subsurface ground insertion for termite control, as an insecticidal dip on non-food plant roots or tops, and in landscape management to kill insects and worms.

Heptachlor (and its epoxide) was used for subsurface ground insertion for termite control and as an insecticidal dip on non-food plant roots or tops.

Banned or cancelled pesticides are found on many sites besides farms. They have been used and may still be stored by parks departments, schools, homeowners, and any site with building or property maintenance activities.

The pesticides listed above have many different brand names and can be difficult to identify by name. They can be identified by the active ingredient(s) listed on the label. If the label is missing the pesticides must be tested for identification.
