Hazardous Waste & Toxics Reduction

Lean and Green Business Assistance

Nic global manufacturing

Manufacturers continually seek more efficient practices to maintain their competiveness in the global market. Top companies have turned to Lean Manufacturing methods to increase efficiency and value. Aerospace manufacturers, cabinet-makers, hospitals, and shipbuilders are all using Lean to lower costs, improve quality, and reduce lead times.

Those same Lean techniques have also proven to reduce waste, energy consumption, and the use or generation of hazardous materials. What’s good for the bottom line can also be good for the environment.

Impact Washington and the Washington State Department of Ecology worked with local, state, and federal government partners to develop the Lean and Green assistance program. Lean and Green helps businesses improve both their sustainability and profitability through:

  • Improving operational processes
  • Reducing wastes, especially those that could harm the environment
  • Reducing energy use and increasing efficiency
  • Supporting business excellence practices

Since 2006, Lean and Green has saved Washington companies millions of dollars and helped them remain competitive. For example:

  • Lean & Green assistance helped Liberty Lake-based metal fabricator Accra-Fab Inc. save more than $179,000 a year while increasing production capacity (Watch a video on Accra-Fab’s experience).
  • Lean & Green consultants helped Pullman-based sensor manufacturer Decagon Devices ensure that its products met European Union standards by eliminating the use of lead-based solder.
