This whole project when it came about was real exciting for us. . . We’d done lean things before, but we never really looked at the environmental side of it. And so, with Ecology there and with their technical support, we were able to . . . get the environmental benefit out of the (project). . . Having the support of Ecology, being right there with us, working the problems out, was tremendous.

In improving manufacturing, we try to take out waste, non-value added activity. In this case, we have been able to partner with Ecology to focus not just on the operational waste and non-value activity, but on the hazardous material and potential pollution generated by the manufacturing process and to reduce that as well.

I was very impressed with the Department of Ecology staff. They were engaging and sincere in their desire to help us determine both the root causes and potential solutions to our waste issues. The team did a great job of questioning our assumptions on why we operate the way we do. Rather than presenting solutions to us, they helped guide us in finding solutions ourselves.
