Hanford Stratigraphy

Unique and Difficult

The varied layers caused by years of competing geologic influences - from lava flows to the great Missoula Floods - make understanding groundwater at Hanford a challenge.  In addition to the water ground water aquifers, there is the hyphoreic zone - an area along the river shore where water may move from groundwater toward the river, or where the river may move into the banks and re-charge the groundwater.
