Are you looking to experience what could be one of the most rewarding years of your life? The WCC is an opportunity for WCC Members to learn valuable job skills and receive training while gaining experience in the environmental or energy field. The diversity of WCC Projects provides something for everybody! The WCC is open to 18-25 year olds. Previous experience is not required.

A crew consists of 5 WCC Members and a Crew Supervisor. In each crew one WCC member is selected to work in an Assistant Supervisor capacity. The Assistant Crew Supervisor is given more responsibility and receives additional training.

Work Locations

WCC Members serve on crews throughout Washington, please select up to 3 location preferences on your application. Additionally, crew exchanges are encouraged to diversify the WCC experience.

The WCC works on an assortment of natural resource activities which may include some of the following types of projects:

Construction

WCC Members on Emergency Response crews may participate in emergency relief operations involving natural disasters and may be required to live at a campsite while working on location. Read more about Emergency Response crews.

Community service projects are a part of the WCC experience. These projects are designed by WCC Members, it is your chance to complete a project you've always wanted to do!

WCC Training

WCC members receive on the job training of all sorts, as well as formal training classes. Many of our training courses result in a certification. Members may receive training in the types of classes listed below:

  • First Aid / CPR
  • Watershed Assessment (Proper Functioning Condition)
  • Emergency Response
  • Firefighting
  • Chainsaw operation and maintenance
  • GPS
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
  • Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA)
  • Ethnobotany
  • Hazardous Materials Response
  • LEED Green Energy

Typical Workweek

The typical workweek is 40 hours (Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) but longer hours may be required on emergency response assignments. Some travel and out of town projects may require Corpsmembers to be gone up to a week or more at a time. When Corpsmembers are away on spike, lodging and meals are provided.

Is housing or transportation provided?

No, the Corpsmember must provide their own living accommodations. Often times, members will share housing expenses. Corpsmembers must provide their own transportation to and from the crew meeting site. Members are provided housing while on spike assignments.

What will I be paid as a Corpsmember?

Corpsmembers are paid the current Washington state minimum wage.

Is Health Insurance provided?

Yes, Corpsmembers are provided with basic medical insurance coverage.

Do I receive help with existing student loans?

Yes, qualifying student loans may be placed in Forbearance status during a Corpsmembers term of service. AmeriCorps will pay the interest accrued on the loan(s) for members who successfully complete their term of service.

AmeriCorps Education Award

After successful completion of your WCC service term, you will receive an education award of $4,725 (12 months/1700 hour service term) or $2,363 (6 month/900 hour service term) from AmeriCorps.

The education award can be used to pay for tuition at an institute of higher education (trade schools included) or to pay back qualified student loans. We are looking for individuals who are committed to completing their term of service, willing to accept challenges, participate as a team player, and have the desire to learn and grow. How to Apply:

All current WCC positions for the 2009-2010 service year are now full, except the City of Redmond. Click here for application.

All 1-year positions will be open again in August 2010 for a start date of October 2010.

Money for College

Receive an AmeriCorps education award. Full-time positions (year-long) earn $4,725 and Half-time positions earn $2,362.50. This can be used to pay off qualified students loans or for attending college. For more on the education award, click here.

Student Loans

Your qualified student loans can be deferred while you are enrolled in the program. You should ask your lender to be sure. If your loans are eligible (typically government-backed student loans), AmeriCorps will pay for the interest that accrues while you are in the WCC upon successful completion of your service.

WCC Members are covered under a basic health insurance policy.
