A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Puget Sound region on Feb. 28th at 10:55 AM. The epicenter was NE of Olympia, in the Nisqually delta area. Many buildings were damaged and numerous landslides occurred.

Additional landslides may occur
The February 28th earthquake triggered numerous landslides throughout the Puget Sound region. Additional landslides may be possible. In 1949, three days after an earthquake struck Olympia, a large landslide occurred in Tacoma.

New rains may trigger new slides
The recent earthquake occurred during an unusually dry winter. New rains, however, may trigger additional slides. Avoid allowing runoff to enter areas of earthquake disturbance.

Get help if you have concerns
If you live near steep slopes or in a landslide prone area, carefully inspect the area around your home for signs of earth movement, cracks, significant changes in seepage, etc. If you have concerns, contact local officials or a geotechnical professional.
