Heavy rain, snow, and slides     1996 had already been a wet year in Puget Sound when heavy snow and rain began to fall after Christmas. Rainfall and snowmelt climaxed on New Years Eve, resulting in hundreds of shallow landslides in the central Puget Sound region.
