Reardan Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update
On April 5, 2017, the Department of Ecology provided the Town of Reardan with required and recommended changes to the Town’s proposed comprehensive update of their Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The changes are based on Ecology’s review of whether or not the proposed update complies with state laws and rules, and a public comment period held August 17, 2016 to September 19, 2016.
Ecology used mail and email to notify interested parties of the public comment period. Ecology also issued a news release to encourage additional public participation and comment. We received one comment letter from a citizen. Comments focused on a wide variety of topics including shoreline environment designations and names of shoreline features. Ecology sent a summary of comments to the town and received their responses. The public comments and town’s responses have been incorporated into Attachment: A Findings and Conclusions (below).
Lincoln County along with Reardon and Odessa formed a coalition to pursue a regional update to their SMPs. The regional comprehensive update revises the existing SMPs, including the goals, policies, regulations, shoreline environment designations, and administrative procedures and definitions. This updated SMPs increase protection and restoration of habitat and water quality, provides more certainty for development, and improves public access and recreational opportunities.
Ecology’s required and recommended changes have been sent to the town for their review and response. The Town may agree to these changes or offer alternative language. Final Ecology approval will occur when the town and Ecology agree on language that meets state requirements.
