Riverside Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update

Public Comment Requested - September 21, 2017 to October 23, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

The Washington Department of Ecology seeks public comment on the Town of Riverside’s proposed update to its Shoreline Master Program.

The Town of Riverside has prepared a comprehensive Shoreline Master Program (SMP) that reflects the local vision for appropriate shoreline development, public shoreline access, and environmental protection as required by the Shoreline Management Ace (RCW 90.58). This plan will be the first SMP prepared by the Town of Riverside. Riverside previously regulated shoreline development under a regional SMP prepared for Okanogan County. The Okanogan River and its associated wetlands comprise the SMA shorelines of Riverside. This SMP includes goals, policies, regulations, shoreline environment designations, administrative procedures, and definitions. This SMP increases protection and restoration of habitat and water quality, provides more certainty for development, and improves public access and recreational opportunities.

Ecology will compare Riverside's proposed program to the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Based on the comparison, Ecology will decide whether to:

  • Approve the program as is or with recommended changes, or
  • Send the proposed program back to the Town of Riverside with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
