Whatcom County Shoreline Master Program: Limited Amendment

Public comment period is closed

We held a public comment period on Whatcom County’s proposed limited amendment to their Shoreline Master Program to address use of single-family residences as short-term vacation rentals. The period for public comment was from January 3, 2017 to February 2, 2017.

Mail and email were used to notify those who had expressed prior interest. We have received 11 written comments. Comments are focused on concerns about neighborhood impacts and impacts to water quality and shoreline habitats.

Response to public comment

We have prepared a summary of public comments and sent this to Whatcom County on February 7, 2017. The county provided a response to these comments on August 24, 2017. Our response to the public’s comments will be posted here when available. Please check back.

Next steps: Our decision

We will decide if the county’s proposed program update meets the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. We will decide whether to:

  • Approve the amendment as is or with recommended changes, or
  • Send the proposed amendment back to Whatcom County with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.

Relevant documents will be posted on this website when they become available.  Please check back.
