Malden Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update
On April 26, 2017, the Department of Ecology approved the Town of Malden Shoreline Master Program (SMP) comprehensive update. Per RCW 90.58.090, the effective date of the Malden shoreline program is May 10, 2017, 14 days after Ecology provided notice to the Town that their shoreline program was approved.
The current joint Town SMP was developed as a regional effort with Whitman County and was approved by Ecology in 1974. The 1974 SMP has never been comprehensively updated since that date. This SMP update is also needed to address land use changes that have occurred along the Town’s shorelines over the past 42 years and to provide consistency between the updated SMP and the environmental protection and land use management policies and practices of the Town of Malden. This comprehensive SMP update is intended to entirely replace the Town’s existing SMP. This updated SMP will regulate development along the Town’s river shoreline which encompasses the Pine Creek within the Town’s jurisdiction, land within 200 of the ordinary high water mark of the creek, and all associated wetlands. The updated SMP is a significant upgrade from the current 1974 SMP. The proposed SMP contains locally tailored shoreline management policies, regulations, environmental designations, and administrative provisions that have been updated to reflect these changes.
The Department of Ecology held a public comment period for the Malden SMP from August 24, 2016 to September 26, 2016. Ecology used mail and email to notify those who had expressed prior interest. Ecology also issued a news release to encourage public participation and comment. Ecology has received no comments on the Malden SMP update.
