Pateros Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update

The Public Comment Requested - August 25 to September 23, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

The Washington Department of Ecology seeks public comment on the City of Pateros's  proposed update to its Shoreline Master Program.

Pateros is located along two rivers with shorelines of statewide significance – the Methow River and the Columbia River. The City is located in southern Okanogan County at the mouth of the Methow River as it flows into the Columbia River. The Methow has an average discharge into the Columbia of 1,600 cubic feet per second (cfs). Its watershed is located on the eastern slope of the Cascade Mountains and is 1,167,764 acres in size. The update of Pateros's Shoreline Master Program seeks to balance development needs and environmental protection, and ensure river access for years to come.

Ecology will compare the City of Pateros's proposed program to the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Based on the comparison, Ecology will decide whether to:

  • Approve the program as is or with recommended changes, or
  • Send the proposed program back to the City of Pateros with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
