Vader Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update

Public Comment Requested - July 6, 2017 to August 7, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

The Washington Department of Ecology seeks public comment on the City of Vader’s proposed update to its Shoreline Master Program (SMP).

Vader’s proposed shoreline program will guide construction and development along approximately 6,900 feet of the Olequa Creek shoreline. The proposed master program update contains locally tailored shoreline management policies, regulations, environment designations, and administrative provisions as well as critical areas regulations to manage shoreline development throughout the City’s shoreline jurisdiction.

The shoreline program gives priority to conservation and enhancement of native shoreline vegetation and encourages habitat-friendly shoreline protection measures. The shoreline program establishes procedures to preserve and protect cultural and archaeological resources, prohibits overwater coverage by new docks and piers, and clarifies public access requirements.

Ecology will compare Vader’s proposed shoreline program with the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Based on the comparison, Ecology will decide whether to:

  • Approve the program as is, or with recommended changes, or
  • Send the proposed program back to Vader with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
