Wilkeson Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update
On May 28, 2013, the Department of Ecology approved the Town of Wilkeson’s Shoreline Master Program (SMP) comprehensive update. Per RCW 90.58.090, the effective date is June 11, 2013, 14 days after Ecology provided notice to Wilkeson that their shoreline program was approved.
The updated program establishes new shoreline designations, integrates Wilkeson’s critical areas ordinance, and proposes new use and development regulations tailored for this historic community. Wilkeson currently regulates shoreline areas using Pierce County’s shoreline program, which was last updated in 1981. The update will regulate just over 1.5 miles of Wilkeson Creek, a tributary of South Prairie Creek within the Puyallup-White River watershed. The Puyallup-White River watershed is also known as state Water Resource Inventory Area 10 (WRIA 10).
On May 13, 2013, Ecology provided Wilkeson with required changes to the town’s proposed update submitted to Ecology on October 9, 2012. The changes were needed to meet state law and requirements for shoreline program updates. The changes were based on Ecology’s review of whether or not the proposed update complies with state laws and rules, and a public comment period held December 3, 2012 through January 14, 2013. Ecology used mail and email to notify those who had expressed prior interest. Ecology also issued a news release to encourage public participation and comment. We received no comments during the public comment period.
