Ecology Department seeking public review on Spokane County’s revised shoreline regulations

How the shorelines along the Spokane River and Spokane County’s lakes and streams will be protected and regulated is mapped out in a revised document that needs public review.

The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is asking the public to review Spokane County’s proposed update of its shoreline master program. The review period will run through October 2, 2009.

A public workshop and hearing is planned for

7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009
Spokane Community College
Building 6, Sasquatch Room
1810 N. Greene St., Spokane.

The proposed shoreline regulations are designed to guide construction and development in Spokane County’s 730 miles of river, stream and lake shorelines. The revised master program combines local plans for future shoreline development and preservation with new shoreline development ordinances and related permitting requirements.

Spokane County held one public hearing before the county commissioners adopted the SMP locally. However, one more public review period is required before Ecology develops the final document. When and if Ecology makes changes, that version will require an approval signature from the Department of Ecology’s director, Jay Manning.
