OIL SPILL INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard and the Washington State Department of Ecology continue to investigate and develop leads based on information gathered from phone calls or reports to the Incident Command Center and Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Puget Sound.

Information and oil samples from numerous domestic and foreign commercial vessels and designated water front facilities continue to be collected and analyzed in connection to the investigation.  Until all information and samples have been completely analyzed and evaluated, no vessels or facility will be ruled out as a potential source.  The Coast Guard and the Department of Ecology have collected samples from vessels and facilities in the Puget Sound area.  Additionally, Coast Guard units in Alaska and Oregon have collected samples from vessels.

The investigation has not narrowed in scope to any specific vessels or facilities at this time.

Two subpoenas have been issued by Coast Guard marine investigators in relation to the case.  In accordance with federal regulations, Coast Guard marine investigators have the authority to subpoena witnesses, require persons having knowledge of the subject matter of the investigation to answer questionnaires and require the production of relevant books, papers, documents and other records.
