Sampling Activities - 2004 September 10 and 11
Ecology staff - Post, Mora and Davis.
Sampling Location: Highwood Lake, altitude 4200 feet, is found in the
Heather Meadows Fee area. Apparently for much of the year the area is
buried in snow. Highwood Lake is fed by at least three sources: Picture Lake,
the storm water inflow from the Chalet, and a run off stream from the ski
center. The outflow is marked on the map and is thought to drain into Galena
Creek. The perimeter of the lake features wetland grasses (sedges) and some
willows.
Map Overview: The map represents sampling locations and
relative raw fluorescence scores. Concentrations are heaviest near the storm
drain outfall adjacent to the Fir Chalet. Although concentrations abated
overnight due to cleanup activities and heavy rains, many areas retained similar
readings from the previous day. Probable cause for the persistent concentration
is high residence time and oil retention in surrounding vegetative substrate. A
confirmation sample for the fluorometry data was collected from the high impact
area. Sediment samples were taken from the anticipated route of entry into the
French drain adjacent to the generator building.
