An oil spill drill on Padilla Bay came to a successful conclusion after noon today. The drill – which involved several response organizations – began around sunrise on the rising tide and concluded after high tide a few hours later.

Skimmer vessels and work boats successfully formed skimming formations on the open water. The boats position floating boom to channel oil to the skimmers. (There is no oil used in drill.)

Meanwhile, crews placed boom across part of the mouth of Telegraph Slough. The bay proved too shallow on today’s 7.1-foot tide for boats to work on another section, as planned. The information gained from today’s operations will guide future plans to protect the slough in the event of a nearby oil spill.

Vessels and crews coordinated well, under the leadership of Marine Spill Response Corporation, a not-for-profit spill-response organization cooperatively owned by shipping companies, oil terminals and pipelines that operate in Washington State.

The Department of Ecology observed and evaluated the drill.
