Improving Commingled Recycling in WA

Regional Workgroups - Southwest

Goal & Objectives

Goal: Address contamination and material loss in our single-family residential commingled curbside recycling programs to ensure best and highest use of recyclable materials and maximize their market value.

Objectives:
Seeking the truth in order to:
  1. Obtain comprehensive knowledge to inform changes to programs
  2. Provide data, plus story (context), to elected officials
  3. Provide consistency in public education messages (including dangerous items like sharps)
  4. Reduce MRF problems in sorting
  5. Create feedback loops, both positive and negative, for the system as a whole
  6. Identify current funding mechanisms for public education for each jurisdiction in the Workgroup

Glass Summit

Because glass breaks, it presents unique challenges in the commingled recycling system. Simply by moving through the collection and processing system, the quality and marketability of the glass degrades significantly and it also is a major source of contamination for other materials; yet, the environmental benefits of recycling glass back into glass are numerous. To fully explore this issue, a Glass Summit was convened in 2009.
