Environmentally Preferred Purchasing

Office Products

Significant opportunities exist for cost savings and improved environmental performance by purchasing remanufactured toner cartridges, greener office paper and office products, and reusing office supplies and furniture.

Remanufactured Toner Cartridges

Buying remanufactured toner cartridges is an easy way to save on printing costs while substantially reducing the environmental impact of printing. "Remans" are a good choice as they:
  • Cost about 40 percent less than new content cartridges. Washington State agencies saved almost $8 million by purchasing remanufactured toner cartridges in fiscal year 2008, according to the Department of Enterprise Services.
  • Reduce waste disposal costs.
Specify remanufactured toner cartridges that meet original equipment manufacturers (OEM) standards, comply with equipment warranty requirements, and have a 100 percent money-back guarantee.

Office Paper

Many organizations have offset the higher cost of 100 percent recycled content paper through paper reduction campaigns. Cost saving strategies include:
  • Default duplex printing, which can slash paper costs by almost half.
  • Reducing ink use and wear and tear on printers and copiers due to less printing.
  • Creative solutions by staff, such as not requiring hard copies of documents.
State law 43.19A.022, Recycled content paper for printers and copiers -- Purchasing priority, requires that agencies purchase 100 percent recycled content white cut sheet bond paper for use in printers and copiers.

There are no performance differences between recycled content and virgin paper.

Re-used Office Products and Furniture

Many agencies save money and avoid costs by building a robust reuse program and buying surplus.

Office Supplies

When your agency does purchase new office supplies such as binders, pens and batteries, the greener options often save money since they:
  • Are more durable and higher quality
  • Are refillable, rechargeable, remanufactured or re-usable
  • Save energy
  • Often reduce packaging and transportation costs
