Regional Information -
Eastern Region (ERO)
Youth Crews
NOTE: The Governor's current proposal for the 2011-13 biennium contains sufficient funds to
operate a reduced EYC program in summer 2012, however the actual litter budget won't be
finalized until the Legislature concludes in Spring. Ecology will need to adjust the number of
EYC summer crews if there are fewer funds than in the Governor's proposal.
*Dependent upon final Legislative budget outcomes for July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013, the
Department of Ecology in the Eastern Regional Office (ERO) is planning to hire crews in multiple
locations for the summer of 2012. Only applicants available to work for a
full session
will be considered for employment.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 1, 2012 - April 2, 2012
Those hired will work:
FIRST SESSION: June 25 - July 20, 2012
OR
SECOND SESSION: July 23 - August 17, 2012
Applicants must:
- Be 14-17 years old on the first day of employment and provide proof of age
- Be eligible to work in the United States
- Have a Social Security card and photo identification
- Submit an application form.
- Submit two references from school personnel (teacher, school counselor, school administrator, coach) using
the reference form.
- Be available to work for a full session. Camps and vacations are not a good excuse
to miss work when the period is so short, and many other teens desire and need a job.
NOTE: Post cards are sent to all applicants, confirming receipt of their application.
You will be contacted further if you are chosen for an interview.
Ecology is unable to interview all applicants due to the large number of applications received.
We select Ecology Youth Corps crew members based on their interview
score and their references. If you have not received word from us by June 1,
regretfully, this means your application was not selected this time. We invite you to reapply
next year if you are still between the ages of 14 and 17.
The application process has TWO parts:
Part 1 is the on-line application
Part 2 contains the TWO teacher reference forms that must be submitted
You may apply ONE time per summer.
Your application is not complete until we
have received both PART 1 AND PART 2.
Completed packets [application AND 2 reference forms] must be RECEIVED BY our office by the
April 2, 2012 deadline in order to be considered.
- You will earn $9.04 per hour
- Your paycheck will be mailed to your home twice a month
- You will work:
- 37.5 hours per week
- 7:00 am to 2:30 pm
- Monday thru Friday
- You will get two paid 15-minute breaks per day
- You will get a paid 30-minute lunch period

Along with litter pickup activities and a strong emphasis on recycling, the EYC program in this
region places an important emphasis on the environmental education of its crew members.
Participants will take part in discussions, projects and inter-crew competitions on environmental
issues such as waste reduction, pollution, energy and water conservation, biodiversity, and
sustainability. Tours will be led to Spokane's Waste-to-Energy plant, as well as, fish hatcheries,
recycling centers, aluminum can smelters, or other places of environmental significance. Some
crews may spend time working at the recycling center or delivering an anti-litter message to the
general public at fairs, parks, or rest areas.
NOTE: In this region former EYC crew members may reapply, though each crew may
only have up to one returning worker.
There is only one median crew in the Eastern Region.
This crew is based in Ritzville and operates from March
to June and September to
November. The pay is $11 per hour and the crew works 38
hours per week, Monday through Thursday. You must be at
least 18 years of age and out of school to apply for this
position as this is not a "summer-only" employment position. Litter pickup along highway
medians, interchanges, illegal dumps, and other areas off-limits to youth crews comprise the
bulk of the work load.
NOTE: There are currently two openings on this crew. Application Deadline: February 27, 2012.

Each year the Eastern Region employs about a dozen supervisors. Most supervisors return year
after year. In most years there are several openings, however, and interviews usually take place
in March or April. Depending on funding, successful
candidates then help interview applicants for their respective crew positions,
and then, along with the program coordinator, meet the new crew members and their parents to
share information about the program and complete the required paperwork.
Before actual road work begins, the supervisors gather in Spokane for intensive training
to include First Aid/CPR, Sexual Harassment, Defensive Driving, Hazard Recognition and Safety
Set-ups. The following week most of the supervisors begin work with their crews, though some
supervisors must wait until the second session begins before heading out with their
crews. After the first session some supervisors will have ended their summer work, while
others will get a new group.
