The Ecology Youth Corps

The Ecology Youth Corps (EYC) is Washington State's largest youth employment program. Every year over 400 teens are hired statewide. These youth provide an important service to their community while earning more than minimum wage. They gain valuable job skills, teamwork experience, and safety awareness and receive environmental education as well.

EYC has removed litter and promoted recycling and litter abatement throughout the state of Washington for over 25 years. Our crews pick up approximately 600 tons of litter a year and recycle 93,000 lbs. of materials. The Washington Waste Reduction, Recycling, and Model Litter Control Act, RCW 70.93, provides funding for the Ecology Youth Corps through a litter tax levied on various manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers throughout Washington State. Items taxed are products that tend to become litter such as fast food, beverages, tobacco products, paper products, non-drug sundry items, and others.
