Washington Green Building OrganizationsWashington is a national leader in green building. This is due in large part to the numerous green building organizations that are active across the state. If you are interested in becoming involved in green building and sustainable community development in your area, you may consider contacting these groups. Some of the local groups are listed below:Built Green® Washington Built Green® Washington is a non-profit cooperative representing local Built Green programs throughout the state of Washington. Built Green programs encourage environmentally-responsible site development and construction by certifying homes that meet certain criteria. The programs are supported by local home builders associations, using a checklist-based system. Various levels of certification are possible, depending on which local program is used for certification. Cascadia Region Green Building Council (CRGBC) The CRGBC is one of the three original chapters of the US Green Building Council and, as a chapter of the Canada Green Building Council as well, is the only international chapter in North America. CRGBC is named for the Cascadia bio-region, which covers land that drains to the Pacific Ocean. Cascadia Chapter Branches have been established region-wide to provide networking and continuing education opportunities for members and industry professionals in their immediate marketplace. CRGBC is Washington's primary educator on the LEED® rating system. Habitat for Humanity of Washington State Habitat for Humanity of Washington State is the organization established to assist all 39 Habitat affiliates in Washington to achieve their mission of building healthy, affordable homes for families unable to otherwise afford them. The Washington organization has adopted the Evergreen Sustainable Developement Standard, a green building standard for affordable housing developed by the Department of Commerce in 2008. Northwest EcoBuilding Guild (NWEBG) NWEBG is an alliance of builders, designers, suppliers, homeowners, and partners concerned with ecological building in the Pacific Northwest. Their mission is to provide leadership in education to transform the built environment and build a sustainable society. The Guild has local chapters across the state and works to:
NNRG's priority is to support the growth of a profitable, sustainable, and environmentally sound timber industry in Washington State, primarily through their Northwest Certified Forestry program for small landowners. NNRG's newest program, Watershed Innovation, provides access for small landowners to emerging markets for ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, water quality, and wildlife habitat, and aggregating the positive impacts these landowners can have on a larger watershed scale.
