Agrium, Hedges

Facility information

The Agrium Hedges facility is one of three non-contiguous facilities that form the Agrium Kennewick Fertilizer Operations.

The only activity at Hedges is groundwater pumping for emergency use. There are two pumps drawing groundwater to supply firewater for the site and the neighboring Simplot property. To maintain line pressure, Hedges continuously pumps and discharges the untreated water to the Columbia River.

History

Collier Chemical, a subsidiary of Unocal, constructed the facility in 1968 and operated it mainly as an ammonia storage and transfer terminal. The facility also blended aqueous ammonia and N-pHURIC, a fertilizer mix of urea prills, sulfuric acid, and water. In 1999, Unocal reorganizes Hedges along with the Kennewick nitric acid plant and the Finley facility into one operation as it is known today. Agrium purchased the facilities from Unocal in 2000 and changed the name to KFO. In January 2005, Agrium shut down all manufacturing, storage, and transfer activities at Hedges. There is currently no plan to resume these activities.
