Industrial Footprint Project
Project update (November 13, 2009)
Thank you to the participants who have stayed with us and the stakeholders
who have asked about the progress of the project. To answer the questions we've heard:
- What happened?
- Our original end date was April 1, 2009. During the summer of 2008, we found we needed more
contractor support to build the footprint tool. We started the paperwork, and on August 4, 2008,
Governor Gregoire issued a contracting freeze for all State agencies. This put the project on
hold. On March 30, 2009, we got approval to move forward again.
- What took place between August 4, 2008 and now?
- We extended the project end date to March 31, 2010.
- We hired Dr. William Beyers to adapt the WA State Input/Output model and add it as an indicator.
This gives us the economic multiplier effect at a mill.
- We added $12,000 to the Earth Economics contract. This :
- gives us a more robust footprint tool and waste stream and incentives report
- Adds Dr. Mathis Wackernagel (a world leader in footprinting) as a peer reviewer.
- We updated our Quality Assurance Project Plan.

- Boise, Nippon, and Port Townsend Paper Corporation turned in their data.
- We finalized the indicator list for this phase of the project and built the footprint tool.
- We secured a $45,000 grant for phase two. In the next phase, we will: 1) test the sensitivity
of the tool by collecting two more years of data, and 2) conduct waste stream reduction work. We
will continue to collect data from the current participants if they choose to stay with the project.
- What is next?
- Grays Harbor Paper and Simpson Tacoma Kraft are still collecting data.
- We will hold stakeholder meetings during December. We look forward to showing you the footprint
scores and hearing critiques of the tool!
- Dr. Wackernagel and the Gund Institute will provide a third party review.
- The final report for this phase will come out by May 31, 2009.
