Ocean Protein

Ocean Protein's State Waste Discharge Permit was reauthorized August 1, 2011. During the permit's comment period, the Grays Harbor Paper (GHP) mill closed. GHP continues to operate their wastewater treatment facility that receives stormwater and Ocean Protein's wastewater. If GHP becomes unable or unwilling to treat the wastewater, Ocean Protein will need to discharge to the City of Hoquiam's wastewater treatment plant or another suitable facility. We plan to reauthorize this permit based on conditions known at this time. It will need to be modified or a new permit issued if conditions change.

Location & History

The plant, located at 518 22nd Avenue in Hoquiam, is the only fishmeal processing plant in Washington state. After converting the old Rayonier Vanilin plant, operations started in 2005. The plant employs up to 10 people and averages 4,000 metric tons of fishmeal, 160 tons of fish oil and 80 metric tons of bone annually.

The plant discharges process wastewater to Gray's Harbor Paper's sewer system. The wastewater includes:
  • Tank rinse water.
  • Treated stickwater (water collected from the fish after being cooked, pressed, and having non soluble protein solids and oil removed by centrifuges).
